Training program in psychoanalysis
The Institute of Contemporary psychoanalysis accepts applications for psychoanalytic training between June 1st and July 15th of each calendar year. The program of study consists of the personal analysis, the conduct of analysis under supervision, and four years of seminars. The institute has been approved by the State of California Bureau for Private Post-Secondary Education to grant both the Psy.D and Ph.D degrees in psychoanalysis. Candidates completing the regular program will receive a Psy.D (Doctorate in Psychoanalysis). The Ph.D degree has a few additional requirements. In addition to these degrees, graduates will be certified in psychoanalysis. ICP is also approved to train qualified academicians in psychoanalysis under the California Research Psychoanalyst law regulated by the Medical Board of California.

The curriculum gives candidates considerable freedom to choose among seminars; fully half the course offerings are case conferences and a wide array of electives. Candidates demonstrate their clinical skills and understanding of psychoanalytic principles through written case reports, participation in supervision and seminars, and the graduation project.
continuing education credit
Most ICP core courses and some electives, as well as most public education programs, are approved for Category 1 Continuing Education Credit by the Board of Behavioral Sciences and the Bureau of Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. ICP is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. ICP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
the part time program
Candidates in the part time program take only half of the standard first year seminars in their first year at ICP, and take the remaining half their second year. Beginning with their third year, they take the full load of classes. Additionally, they may defer beginning the full four to five times/week training analysis until their third year; instead, they are in therapy with an approved ICP training analyst at a minimum of two times/week. Beginning in their third year, they enter full time status and must begin their official, full time training analysis.
weekend psychoanalytic training program
Candidates who live at a distance or work full-time may participate in the ICP’s unique course of psychoanalytic training through our weekend program. This program meets six times a year, Friday through Sunday. Courses are equivalent to those available in the weekly training program in both quality and amount of time. Candidates currently enrolled in this program travel from as far as Australia, and include students from all corners of the United States.
