AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION
The mandate of the ICP Continuing Education Program is to provide doctoral level clinical psychologists with training in psychological decision making and the determination of suitable treatment algorithms for the practice of mental health care. A particular concern is the consideration of which clinical problems are most relevant for psychoanalytic therapies. This orientation is constructed from a multi-disciplinary informed standard of care. The cornerstone of the training is contemporary psychoanalytic constructs and techniques based upon the published literature and professional trends consistent with evolving social needs. The ICP Continuing Education Program Committee views contemporary psychoanalysis through the lens of psychoanalytic psychology in that the standards of psychological practice are an integral component of its academic curriculum and continuing education. As such, evidence based and community standards of clinical practice as well as evolving ethical and legal concerns are given high priority in determining and implementing training needs.
ICP endeavors to improve competence in professionally relevant ways. Self monitoring of clinical ability is facilitated by encouraging critical thinking, critical inquiry, and balanced judgment in regard to psychologists, their patients, and the overall standing of the professional community that they serve. In order to advance the competence of our psychologists, all courses, both those that are in-house and those that are geared to the wider community, are designed to meet the level of post-graduate education.
In summary, specific goals for ICP’s Continuing Education Program for psychologists are:
1. Offer current and scientifically based education within the discipline of psychology and relevant fields.
2. Provide opportunities for psychologists to acquire new understanding, competencies, and practice based education that can be applied relevantly to clinical practices.
3. Present the most up-to-date developments within the field and present the relevancy of these changes to the field of psychology.
4. To engage in a dialogue of process that encompasses new ideas, different philosophies, and clinical ideas to enhance patient outcomes.
5. Provide an opportunity for psychologists to discuss a wide range of psychological topics and methodologies, quantitative and qualitative, as well as cultural differences and environmental pressures that influence the communities served.
6. Provide assurances those offerings that adhere to the standards, criteria, policies and procedures of the American Psychological Association Sponsor Approval System.
